I want to throw something
DOCTOR Daryl Gross, in his infinite wisdom, announced Doug Marrone as the 28th head football coach at Syracuse University. Before this week, we would have been asking the same thing you are right now, "Who the hell is Doug Marrone?" It turns out that Doug is an SU Almnus who has spent that past 6 years working in the NFL. Prior to the NFL he was with various college institutions, including Division I-AA/III/III powerhouses Cortland St., Northeastern and the US Coast Guard Academy.
Marrone has not been in the Northeast College Football realm since 1994. Yes, that is before most current High school footballer players were even playing Pop Warner.
Before 2006, Marrone never held a coaching position higher than Offensive Line Coach. In 2006 he was named the Offensive Coordinator for the New Orleans Saints (although Sean Payton continues to call the plays).
I salute the fact that DOCTOR Daryl Gross saw that people wanted a coach who is passionate about Syracuse football. The problem is, Marrone has no experience as a head coach, he has no recruiting ties any longer and it looks like we are going to be stuck with 4 years of the new GROB.

Looks like HireTurnerGill wasn't a big hit with the good DOCTOR. Shame. He would have made the Cuse a winner.
Criticizing a decision without offering a viable alternative (ie. someone other than Petersen, Leach, Holtz, and Gill, who all would not take the job for various reasons) isn't helpful or illuminating. Who would your choice be if the aforementioned 4 coaches are excluded?
The evidence you use to support your point is incredibly flawed. Marrone said the SU job was his dream job, and as an alum (unlike GROB) I tend to believe him. This is especially true in light of how prepared he was not only for the meeting with Gross, but the committee Gross set up to advise him as well. He also flew himself to Syracuse for a second interview when none of the other candidates were even enthusiastic about the first interview.
Marrone brings a fresh offensive mind that is well suited to the fast track at the Dome and attracts kids that want to play entertaining, good football. Moreover, it will attract fans to the Dome, something that has been sorely lacking. It's difficult to recruit ANYONE when they see an empty stadium on their official visits, and Marrone's style and enthusiasm will change that.
Some flaws you mention (being out of the college game / NE for a long time being chief among them) are valid, and concern me. However, any coach that Syracuse could get at this point would have similar or greater holes in their resume.
Obviously Gill would have been ideal in the short term, but he'd leave for Nebraska when that job inevitably comes open, in the unlikely event he were to take the job to begin with.
No recruiting ties? Really, do you research first!
Give the guy a chance. And its not like every coach in America was dying to come to 'Cuse.
Really? You write that he was with "various college institutions" and then name the places he was at when he was just starting his coaching career. You (intentionally) failed to mention Georgia Tech, Georgia and Tennessee.
